(Modern) Times They Are A' Changing

iPods and Dylan. Cool and cooler.

God is Alive, Magic is Afoot - CLICK HERE

God is Alive, Magic is Afoot
Leonard Cohen
sung by
Buffy St. Marie

I am posting this because perhaps more than any song I can think of, it deals with Synchronicity.

Synchronicity is probably the best description of that feeling we all have [or get] of MAGIC. That feeling you get that sets you right on THE EDGE of Paranoia.
Deja'Vu remembering itself. Dreams dreaming of dreams that are dreaming of awakening. Being in two places at once. Knowing when the phone is about to ring. Wishing you had loved someone and discoveriing they were wishing it too. Praying for someone and feeling someone praying for YOU.

We get to use about 10% of our brains, conciousness and awareness probably so we don't interfere in what God is doing in our lives.

KCAC Lives! positively REEKS with synchronicity. Do you have any idea what the ODDS are of what's happening now ACTUALLY happening? They are astrnomical and I for one do not KNOW what is happening here but it doesn't matter about explaining it. Synchronicity happens. It's like Dixieland Jazz. Everybody gets to Solo all the way through the song and anything you DO is right.

Bill and I happened to be together at the Scottsdale house on Shaw Butte I believe, when we heard this for the first time. There was nothing but desert all the way to Taliesen West. Nowadays it is all part of a giant honeycomb of houses; "Great hives of bees do I see" - Nostradamus

The effect of the song was like being hit by a truck. Wow. I recognized the etherial effect immediately.. the sound of Buffy trying like God, to "break through". The fade-in-fade-out effect was from tape technology. You record a track, leave it rolling on the deck and then zap it here and there with a bulk tape eraser. It erases just SECTIONS of the recording creating that awesome effect that the song became famous for.

Knowing all that made no difference. All this and Leonard Cohen too?

God is Alive - Magic is afoot. Holy Shit. What's next?

God is alive; Magic is afoot
God is alive; Magic is afoot
God is afoot; Magic is alive
Alive is afoot.....
Magic never died.

God never sickened;
many poor men lied
many sick men lied
Magic never weakened
Magic never hid
Magic always ruled
God is afoot
God never died.

God was ruler
though his funeral lengthened
Though his mourners thickened
Magic never fled
Though his shrouds were hoisted
the naked God did live
Though his words were twisted
the naked Magic thrived
Though his death was published
round and round the world
the heart did not believe

Many hurt men wondered
many struck men bled
Magic never faltered
Magic always led.
Many stones were rolled
but God would not lie down
Many wild men lied
many fat men listened
Though they offered stones
Magic still was fed
Though they locked their coffers
God was always served.

Magic is afoot. God rules.
Alive is afoot. Alive is in command.
Many weak men hungered
Many strong men thrived
Though they boasted solitude
God was at their side
Nor the dreamer in his cell
nor the captain on the hill
Magic is alive
Though his death was pardoned
round and round the world
the heart did not believe.

Though laws were carved in marble
they could not shelter men
Though altars built in parliaments
they could not order men
Police arrested Magic
and Magic went with them,
for Magic loves the hungry.

But Magic would not tarry
it moves from arm to arm
it would not stay with them
Magic is afoot
it cannot come to harm
it rests in an empty palm
it spawns in an empty mind
but Magic is no instrument
Magic is the end.

Many men drove Magic
but Magic stayed behind
Many strong men lied
they only passed through Magic
and out the other side
Many weak men lied
they came to God in secret
and though they left him nourished
they would not say who healed
Though mountains danced before them
they said that God was dead
Though his shrouds were hoisted
the naked God did live

This I mean to whisper to my mind
This I mean to laugh with in my mind
This I mean my mind to serve 'til
service is but Magic
moving through the world
and mind itself is Magic
coursing through the flesh
and flesh itself is Magic
dancing on a clock
and time itself the magic length of God

Second Photo Album Created...

The Photo Album link in the left sidebar, under Community, now says Albums (plural), and leads to a download instruction page on my website, where there are now two links: one to the original KCAC Lives album and another to the new Pegi's Vault KCAC album. This was done to try to keep the number of pictures per album down to a manageable number. Enjoy!

Life, Death, and Real Underground Radio

Thanks Jimmy, that was like medicine to me, loved it. Hey how’d you do that... just make a song appear? Just email me if its some big secret but you know what I’m thinking… Yea. Something to share too.
Maybe I’m not crazy… cause I’ve been expecting and waiting for something like that to happen big time, for years, ever since experiencing something’s similar, many things, similar on a smaller scale and knew it was possible.
Reading the caption next to Bills first picture below ‘born to be wild’ someone let the cat out of the bag when it slips… ‘ KCAC remember, was pulling huge ratings AT NIGHT, long after sign-off.’ … Well the station may have been off the air but them people were still listening to something. Way ta go Bill,… I wonder if he knew that, all the while. Ummm must of.
While were honnering our dead… I do want to share something, Ron, I found on Daniels website this morning, written by Chief Seatle….

'The white man's dead forget the country of their birth when they go to walk
among the stars. Our dead never forget this beautiful Earth, for it is the
mother of the red man. We are part of the Earth and it is part of us. The
perfumed flowers are our sisters, the deer, the horse, the great eagle,
these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the
body heat of the pony, and the man, all belong to the same family.

To us the ashes of our ancestors are sacred and their resting place is
hallowed ground. You wander far from the graves of your ancestors and
seemingly without regret. Your religion was written upon tablets of stone by
the iron finger of your God so that you could not forget. The Red Man could
never comprehend or remember it. Our religion is the traditions of our
ancestors -- the dreams of our old men, given them in solemn hours of the
night by the Great Spirit; and the visions of our sachems, and is written in
the hearts of our people.

Your dead cease to love you and the land of their nativity as soon as they
pass the portals of the tomb and wander away beyond the stars. They are soon
forgotten and never return. Our dead never forget this beautiful world that
gave them being. They still love its verdant valleys, its murmuring rivers,
its magnificent mountains, sequestered vales and verdant lined lakes and
bays, and ever yearn in tender fond affection over the lonely hearted
living, and often return from the happy hunting ground to visit, guide,
console, and comfort them....

Let him [the white man] be just and deal kindly with my people, for the dead
are not powerless. Dead, did I say?… There is no death, only a change of
worlds. '
'Cheif Seatle'

Well enough for now. Just wanted to get that up and out.
Love Ya’ll
Keep the faith

but not in the way one would assume or identify with "Easy Rider". Bill had nothing to prove - to himself or anyone else, and in that quiet acceptance and contentment, a hugely amplified Voice Of Reason rang out over and led - The Valley Of The Sun. KCAC remember, was pulling huge ratings AT NIGHT, long after sign-off.
During the months that Little Willy Sunshine broke ratings records at KRUX, The Family moved, morphed and modified. I personally remember at leas three residences before Starbright Ranch in Laveen. A different place almost every month.

HANK grew and matured also, taking on a huge responsibility with The Maverick House on Latham. It was a grand social experiment - almost a Work In Progress and almost successfull, almost all the time. It was constantly changing though. It had to, because the people did.

RICH AND KARLA ROGERS were among the many friends of KCAC and it's many-faceted Family. Rich was a VERY smooth Jazz DJ who was into several disciplines including Karate, Astrology and just plain people. Some dudes have that Timeless quality about them. I ran into Rich at a stadium concert in 1981. Different shoes and clothes. Same man, exactly.

CHUCK HOLMES it seems, was always smiling. You get like that when you develop a reputation for being one of the best motorcycle mechanics in the state. Always a friend and very tolerant of overly aggressive ping-pong players

PEGI shown here at I believe, The Maverick House. This was in her "Shirley Temple" mode which brings to mind the question every man asks at some point; "HOW do they get their hair to do that? And WHY"?
OO00oops! (sez Ron)
These are great. Just a minor correction on “Pegi as Shirley Temple” – that’s not me. She was a guest at Maverick House. I’m so sorry but I can’t remember her name.

Thanks for these!

Peg Gant

THIS CONCLUDES the first tour of Pegi's Vault - Album One of Four. The others will follow as the subject matter is scanned and digitized. There were about 130 personal photos in this first album and of course, more to come as appropriate. If you have some old pics to contribute and share, they wouod be cherished by all.

ONE FINAL TRANSITORY MARKER in all our lives though, should be noted.

Pictured here as a puppy, Malcom worked his way into many, many lives. And shoes. Sometimes heavy clothing such as coats. Malcom was ALWAYS glad to see you, particularly if you had Big Legs or liked to wrestle. Malcome was a warm, very personal friend of every visitor. And cushions. And couches or other furniture. One very Fond acquaintence of Malcom's was a rolled-up carpet that was finally simply abandoned to him.

In defense of Malcom (who grew to be a HUGE dog).... There were those who stated "THAT is the horniest dog I have ever seen". (That MAY have been Wonderful Russ who made that observation.)

I take issue with that. I saw Malcom several times and NOT ONCE did I observe any horns. None at all.

Frank Zappa at the Star theatre with Condello

Ok figured it out Bob... heres the pic of Frank at the Star 'celebrity' theatre taken before the show... I remember seeing Condello so it must have been that nite.

We have a request for those of you who have websites of your own, or ones which you can edit - we'd like to ask you to please post a link (or links) to this blog on your site(s). This will have two positive effects: it will directly generate more visits to the site from people who visit your site and click on the link, and it will also improve the search engine rankings, which will indirectly generate more traffic from people who find us through a web search (rankings are based partly on the number of sites that link to a particular site).

Thanks! Have a very fine day.

JUST FRIENDS AGAIN Bill and Colleen stroll together, demomnstrating their ability to interact socially with others, without awkwardness.

THE MIGRATION to Phoenix of our band of Adventurers took several trial-and-error pathways. Here is Hank, Pegi and June Johnson at a scene that may have been anywhere between Phoenix and California - our chosen rendevous point. After all we wouold be less than Lemmings if we did n0t make it to the sea - right?

DOZENS AND DOZENS of beautiful, mostly naked young California Women as you can see in this March 1969 picture, greeted us at the beach. Up at Venice Beach and in the LA clubs, Jim Morrison and The Doors were rehearsing. We didn't know that, of course. Meanwhile a bunch of DJ's destined to begin KCAC were hanging out here. Morrison and The Doors didn't know that, of course.

Our main reason for the California Connection was Mike and Frannie Baldwin. (Yep, another Fran). Actually, this picture was made a year or so after our visit, on the occasion of the arrival of Tender Grass, tha baby shown here. Mike had been a Dallas Jazz DJ that I had known of and only spoken with by phone. Imagine my surprise when we finally met, 1500 miles away.

This particular picture means a lot to me because I'm in it! First time for me to see it, too. No, that's Bill in the middle-right. The fat Mexican-looking guy pretending to be an ape - that's me. The girl between Bill and I is Colleen Aanderegg - a former Miss Dallas and former KVIL denizen like Bill, Hank and I.

The Red-Headed Stepchild on the right is Jim Thompson, an old Compton Family friend. Jim and I shared the driving from Ft. Worth all the way to Manhattan Beach, California where this picture was made.. Colleen had just barely passed muster on a strip-search the night before at the Mexican border of El Paso. Jim was driving through the desert at about 3AM when amazingly, we ran out of gas!

I hitched to a station 10 miles up the road that didn't open until 6AM and amazingly also, when I got back at about 8AM, Jim and Colleen were in love. Wow, imagine that. Jim and Colleen went back to Texas, later married and had a couple of kids....... See? I KNEW there was a reason for them to make that trip!

WHAT did they know & WHEN did they know it (Prophecy in song)

CLICK HEADLINE for G0ogle search.
Sopwith Camel ca 1971

(Kraemer, MacNeil, Beard, Mayell)

Who's going to live
in all those cities under ground?
If they move there
will they ever come out, of the ground?

Are they going to raise the children
in tiny caverns in the ground?
Send the children out to play
in the sound they have found?
Fa fa fa fa fa fazon fazon fazon

Who's going to be
the ones who live
beneath the sea?
All their lives, a thousand feet
beneath the sea?
Ocean Mother tells her baby
"used to be a lighter place."
If he's a good baby maybe
might feel the sun on his face
Fa fa fa fa fa fazon fazon fazon

Who's going to go, on all those
trips in outer space?
All their lives in the dark of
outer space.
After a hundred generations
a billion miles from the sun
all these spaced out people
finally find another one.
And they say:
Fa fa fa fa fa fazon fazon fazon

A VERY RARE AND WONDERFUL ARCHIVE of KCAC photos is being shared with us, by Pegi [Cookenboo] Gant, now residing in Florida.

Pegi was Hank Cookenboo's first wife, first Secretary of KCAC and friend to many. This collection of photos is some of the known "best of the best" of the times.

I will attempt to add at least one of these to the blog EVERY DAY as I scan them to CD. THANK YOU Pegi, for trusting me with them.

If you have some of your own to share, please get in touch. When the scans are complete I will pass them along to Daniel Page to be added to the "official" Bill Compton pictures website IN FULL COLOR and at full resolution and actual scan size - which cannot be done on Blogger. What you see here is at best, about 30% of actual size. That is important to note because there are details that are easy to miss in many of these photos. For instance here is Pegi posing with "Snoopy" a stuffed toy, on top of a discarded washing machine near "The Living Room" at Starbright Ranch on the western edge of South Mountain Park in Laveen, AZ.

Off of her left shoulder are some unexplainable "lights" which may have been survey markers or some other artifacts. That Christmas however, some pictures made by Betty with her Polaroid (remember those?) had some undeniable light anomalies on the mountainside. I am told those pictures still exist but I do not know where. We would probably have been spooked by those lights but most of us were preoccupied with some brownies shared by Crazy with everyone. Deck the halls.

THIS is probably the "definitive" earlest picture of the KCAC family, taken also at The Living Room. L to R; Viginia Norton Bill's girlfriend at the time and the second Secretary at KCAC. Seated are Hank and Pegi. Standing at the "coffee table" (tractor tire and bedframe) are Bill on the left and Tommy Vascocue with the Marlborough.

The picture was taken I believe, by Betty Thomson - Ray Thomson's sister - a New York artist, who assembled and constructed The Living Room from discarded materials around the ranch. Besides being hopelessly remote in the desert (about 100 yards from anything), it had a certain cozy quality to it. Far finer ambience than any Lounge in Phoenix.

The "YES" sign was painted by yours truly, Ronco but for whatever reason, I do not know. Jon Anderson and Yes were not recording as yet to the best of my knowledge.

Crazy lives in Tempe
Married three times that Crazy knows
One dude was a hustler
One dude was a drifter
One dude I heard tell
Crazy didn't know

You're crazy to let 'em use you
You're crazy to live alone
I will drive you, Crazy
If I see you by the road
'Cause I will know Crazy
You have gone

Yea, you've gone, Crazy
I believe there's hope for you
You've gone crazy
You've got to be to face the world
You've gone, Crazy
And I think of you
When I'm going too

Crazy to be lonely
Is just dying too damn slow
And Crazy, as it seems
You know to love somebody
Is just that, it's Crazy
The only way to go

Yea, you've gone, Crazy
I believe there's hope for you
You've gone crazy
You've got to be to face the world
You've gone, Crazy
And I think of you
When I'm going too

KCAC lives!

KCAC lives!
Well let me say this about that….
I just picked up the thread and read all the posts… I can feel ya.. Really.. There’s energy [and light] in them words [and them beautiful minds and spirits that write them] and they touch places we don’t visit all the time. There is a feeling of frustration too, and reaching out for a outlet for this energy to do something positive, that I feel too… build a monument, promote peace, leave a time capsule, help a friend, get high and feel good, create a community event for good times, awareness and publicity, build a financial and PR engine [foundation] to help create and herald the future, transcend time & space, through drugs and meditation, to evolve and seek help in the future to share with us now… through both public and private efforts and deeds...
Well that’s it… Its all good, all beautiful and all in the spirit of what we do. Even misguided, short-lived efforts, to help, like a house of cards, or castles made of sand, can do temporary good… sometimes a misguided path lead to a better path just because you started somewhere, like rain, to rivers, to the sea… and its still all in the spirit of that one, simple commandment, ‘Do no harm’.
[not many understood that so they broke it down into 10 commandments… not many understood that so now we have vast legal libraries trying to explain it… not many understood that so now we got greedy self-serving people saying… its not illegal… and I’m not a crook!… and people who don’t know harm from right and wrong from left unless they read it in a book.]
All good and all to be tried, not one at the exclusion of any others, cause in sum total, we are putting out a lot of good energy and ideas that reach others not directly involved with us. We can surely bite off more ideas that we can chew, so to speak, but who’s to say they’re our ideas or that they must be chewed by us.
Hey… fuck these lame words,… wow I just felt that… just then/now when I wrote that as if someone was looking over my shoulder… maybe you who are going to read this my heart is realy beating and I feel something stiring… guess that means I’ll post it… now… Oh…

I’ve seen the power, and trans-formative energy of just two minds sharing the spirit… it just reaches out and touches [innocent?] people at a distance… you may not be aware of it, but it happens, and I don’t mean like shit happens, I mean like matter responds to consciousness happens… I mean like… if you change the way you look at the world, you change the world you look at… happens!
Sharing the spirit is communicating, sharing ideas and truth, investigating the mysteries of life together, looking for ways to improve ourselves and the life we share. In the 60’s we called it conscious raising and sometimes it sounded like arguing… sometimes like everybody talking all at once… and it sure sounds like what were doing here!

Mariah, I’m glad you shared your experience regarding Bill and his death, That was a heavy experience… beautiful and inspiring and I don’t know why you would be reluctant…and it dose show how people and happenings can reach out and touch people at a distance and it sure sounds like Bill. There’s more going on than meets the eye.
I’ve felt friends and family leaving [sat right up out of a sound sleep when my nephew was murdered and knew something troubling just happened] and didn’t know what it was till it was verified later... your experience with your friend was similar. Makes me think of what Ron offered about the dead never realy leaving us just changing states or reuniting. They are still all here with us, and you know that now.
I believe were all here to help, share and grow. so… let me share this.. it aint as beautiful and leaves some mixed emotions… so I don’t talk about it much but it was real at the time… about a night with friends and family in the commune like atmosphere we shared in them days and a very nice trip in progress for me, probably Ozzly or sunshine, and found myself in bed with this very beautiful lady [to me] that I really had feelings for and desired. I thought this moment was destiny if not magic… and we would share love with the angles.. like life depended on it… or at least make love like sensual, erotic animals… Well I was tripin and it didn’t… and we didn’t. She didn’t think it was appropriate and left. It make me feel disappointed, but not mad. [Andy told me long ago… Ya know Opie…some times it just don’t work, now I know… about E.D.] I lay there lost in my thoughts and desires… horny as hell with a ragin hardon… and in my mind I saw this woman being raped.. Somewhere else, beyond my reach?, by someone else and yes it really disturbed me too. Man, that really changed my mood, like that. That’s not what I would wish for or enjoy… and I felt bad, even guilty for what might have happened. I felt a cause and effect connection and I realized that though maybe I could handle my feeling and emotions maybe someone else felt them at a distance and couldn’t…
that with power and influence came the need for control and responsibility.

WHEN WE LAST SAW OUR HEROS Ron, Bob, Dan, Mariah, Bruce, Liz, Jimmy, anonymous posters and about 100 daily readers (minus cyber-hits by web-bots and government spooks) - they were discussing a way to memorialize KCAC/KDKB (The Early Years to about 1977) by possibly marking the accident site. Ron suggested a monument describing something similar to the Monolith in 2001. Bob opened another bottle of Bourbon and described something similar to Stonehenge and the others remained relatively quiet so as not to cause Bob to spill the bourbon.

Jimmy however, piped up with a totally absurd will-o-the-wisp suggestion that the memorial be something DO-ABLE such as an independant website in perpetuity very similar to this one but NOT subject to the whims, down times, screw-ups, SPAM and browser hijacks of Blogger.

As we re-adjust to real-time, the black-ops of The Government (the enemy) are relaying the ISP routing numbers and physical locations of our heros - these cowboys and girls from Mars or other desert environs - to their other lobotomized and brainwashed colleagues at the HAARP installation in Alaska. (Ever notice that HAARP and AARP are almost the same)? Big Brother really knows his abbreviations.

As a reader of this BLOG you can expect a huge microwave zzZZAAAP coming out of your monitor at any moment. Don't be fooled though, it is NOT your computer monitor causing you to pass out but merely your brain cells and other nervous system components being fused together like so much microwaved poached egg. Have no fear, it will NOT affect your erectile dysfunction or digestive rhythms. You will still be able to drive and find your way to Wal-Mart.

"Laughing & crying y'know it's the same release" Joni Mitchell

Ahh, laughter and self deprecation are useful coping tools in a world gone mad. Hence: here's something I just got from a French friend. (o:

The British are feeling the pinch in relation to recent bombings and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the Blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

It's not only the English and French that are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

You can't help but feel blessed that we live in a time that we WISH could be shared with Bill, Hank, Toad and our other passed friends. It's still a wonderful world. Google Earth allows you to go there without BEING there. I just checked out my old place on South Central Avenue, that I used to share with Kevin Reedy Webb of the Do It Now Foundation (Deceased) and the old house is totally gone. So is the concrete cabin cruiser (under construction) that suddenly got dropped in the back yard by a huge crane one day. Serious. It's just a vacant lot now. Desert once again. Dust In The Wind. Sigh.......

Anyway in honor of Kevin and especially Bill, here are some satellite photos taken from waaaaay out there and zoomed in on that you'll likely enjoy. A bit "Artsy" in night-time black and white but fascinating, nonetheless.

Any Ocotillo cactus will tell you - you gotta have SPIKES to protect your stem or some buffallo or camel is gonna chew you up! Ooops.. here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail....

Pines near the desert - shadows at evening....

The Superdome (look towards the upper left corner) is probably best forgotten for now. So forget it.

Forgotten or not what's a Big City without a freeway system? "The Loop" where we can all park and chat on our cell phones for a couple of hours per day?

Now here's a fun picture - nothing like a power blackout to bring out the personality of a big city - right? Even the average Terrorist (or taxi driver) could locate a given building with a good map.

An ancient ocean view but you see this all over the desert, particularly New Mexico of course.

There are many more pictures availabl [CLICK THE HEADLINE] Pictures of seashells, what appear to be masks, engine parts, junkyard items, and lots and lots of sand. That's not uncommon in the Sonora.... but these pictures?

These pictures are all from MARS. Each and every last one of them..... Mars.. you know, waaaaaay out there.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE WATER?....NASA ain't talkin' Not a word. Infrasrructures, domes, mining operations, cranes, freeways, subways, cities....... all desolate and dark. Yet it's all right there in front of us to see. This October another Mars mission is going to work its way up-close and personal. Close enough to read a license plate. Boy, are there going to be some questions THEN! But then again, if some predictions hold true, we may all be very busy at that time with Earth Stuff. But still.......WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE WATER?...

One explanation may be pictured below. Looks like Sedona from 30,000 feet, right? Red Rocks? Green stuff? Criss-crossed roads? Stare at it for a while. The colors are untouched, the photo is brightened a bit and waaaaay zoomed in.

It's a close-up of a very long crack in the planet. A huge CANYON if you would, centered around what appears to be a cave - maybe MANY caves in that canyon which is thousands of miles long. The water? My bet is that it is way down inside those caves and that if you could get in there you would find most of the oxygen on Mars as well.

And while we're in the Science Fiction mode, let's imagine that there is WARMTH in those caves from volcanic activity. And mushrooms and fungus and snails and little squirelly things that go outside at night and leave trails amongst the ocotillos. Little Elves in little jam sessions, just like the house down the street--- "Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Wierd and Gilly - and The Spiders From Mars".

If you can imagine even part of that then you can wrap yourself around this concept; That amongst the ruins and desolation of a destroyed planet, there is LIFE on Mars.

NASA ain't talkin'

KCAC lives!

Vote RFP for New Times Best of Phoenix Awards

Proving they're no flash-in-the-pan, Radio Free Phoenix celebrated it's 2nd year of non-commercial programming on August 18th.

Andy Olson, founder and program director of Radio Free Phoenix remains steadfast to his commitment to quality free form rock radio, presented commercial-free. Inspired by his personal hero, William Edward Compton, Olson has had the dream of Radio Free Phoenix for over 30 years. Radio Free Phoenix solicits donations from listeners, and encourages community businesses to sponsor commercial-free hours.

Radio Free Phoenix is involved in the community and in helping the less fortunate. RFP has helped numerous Valley non-profit agencies including The Valley of the Sun Community Diaper Bank, OLPH School and Katrina Survivors Charities. They also prominently feature various animal rescue agencies.

Billing itself as The Station with a Heart and a Conscience, Radio Free Phoenix distinguishes itself from other internet and satellite stations with local Phoenix rock radio personalities claiming a cumulative 100 years worth of rock radio experience. "The cache of simply "willing" the existence of Radio Free Phoenix, supercedes the need for monetary compensation for RFP's DJ's," says midday talent, Liz Boyle "We're not posers, 'cuz we're doin it for the cause. God Bless people like our afternoon guy, Dave Cooper. He's done an airshift every single weekday for two years, solid. We all donate our time for the love of the music and our desire to keep it alive in a free form, rock radio format."

From the standpoint of the radio business, the veteran staff of RFP is blazing the way for more defectors from the sinking ship of today's commercial radio industry.

Please vote to give Andy and Radio Free Phoenix the recognition they deserve for this public service, inspired and underwritten, by Andy's love of rock and roll and rock and roll radio.

Vote for Radio Free Phoenix:

Best Alternative Station- Radio Free Phoenix
Best Rock Station- Radio Free Phoenix
Best On-Air Personality- (insert) on Radio Free Phoenix

BEFORE: "The Early Days" Actually just a few years ago....

AFTER: Hans at the 1997 reunion.

Take a bunch of jalapenos, creosote bush leaves, a pound of Muddy Waters, a gallon of Lightnin' Hopkin's "Mister Charlie", some tequila or Mescal.... slap it around with a side of Hendrix (just a little) and throw it in the pot with the Road Kill Chili you just poured your beer into........ Oh yeah, some prickly pear squeezins. That's pretty close to Hans Olson's music. Absolutely Arizona. Basically The Blues.

David Bromberg sang "You gotta suffer if your gonna sing the blues". Hans has had his ups and downs since KCAC but he ain't dumb. He's smart enough to learn from others..... What strikes me is his impeccable TASTE. A super-fine and exquisitely tuned guitar, Lee Oskar harmonica and a remarkable, cavernous voice to showcase his appreciation of the blues...

Blues is NOT easy to get into but it's a Tar Baby. Once you are into it, you can't get out of it.

TERROS - and the psychic screams of war.

The TERROS REPORTS for those of you under the age of 40 - was a daily or someties HOURLY report on KCAC of bad or dangerous drugs on the streets of Phoenix. The Terros House [Terros meaning Earth], was a refuge for people on bad trips or who simply were encountering emotional problems.

This was PRACTICAL media - radio for the Common Man. It was a HUGE help with REAL information.

HEAR THAT? YOUR psychic mind MAY be picking up the screams and cries and horror of your brothers and sisters being maimed or killed in the Middle East. We experienced it during the Vietnam era and it continuously had us on edge. Same for your own generation.

Our focus is personal in this life but subtle or not, you can't shut out the pain of others. It's relative of course but absolutely undeniable.

It's hell, being young.

WHAT did they know & WHEN did they know it (Prophecy in song)

Incredible String Band
Way Back in The 1960's ca 1968

I was a young man back in the 1960s.
Yes, you made your own amusements then,
For going to the pictures;
Well, the travel was hard, and I mean
We still used the wheel.
But you could sit down at your table
And eat a real food meal.

But hey, you young people, well I just do not know,
And I can't even understand you
When you try to talk slow.

There was one fellow singing in those days,
And he was quite good, and I mean to say that
His name was Bob Dylan, and I used to do gigs too
Before I made my first million.
That was way, way back before,
before wild World War Three,
When England went missing,
And we moved to Paraguayee.

But hey, you young people, I just do not know,
And I can't even understand you
When you try to talk slow.

Well, I got a secret, and don't give us away.
I got some real food tins for my 91st birthday,
And your grandmother bought them
Way down in the new antique food store,
And for beans and for bacon, I will open up my door.

But hey, you young people, well I just do not know,
And I can't even understand you
When you try to talk slow.

Well, I was a young man back in the 1960s.
