I'd call it "Distinguished"... that look...

DEJA'VU Then & Now Mugshot: MARIAH FLEMING

Here she is; Our Lady Of Perpetual Encouragement, in three poses!

During the mid - 1970's "Love Workshop" days at KDKB. Publicity photo for a cassette project.

Onstage in Touloose, France - 1980 (Some people just can't handle applause).

Her 2006 incarnation, snatched from a group picture at Uranus Recording Studios in Tempe, with Robin Wilson. .

I firmly believe that were it not for her CONSISTENT efforts to keep this blog alive, this whole thing would have archived itself into oblivion by now. KCAC Lives! would otherwise, be quite dead.

Mariah was The Voice on the commercials for..... well, in her words; AD 1: "Hi, I'm Shirley MacLaine and in my travels through the People's Republic of China the one thing peasant women everywhere told me they wanted was their own bank..."

AD 2: "First Women's...offers interest free car loans for women, and for those of you who find procreation cumbersome and distasteful, we offer a free sperm bank for women who deposit $500 or more"

AD 3: "In Sept (?) 1976, First Women's National Credit and Trust Bank will open its doors in Phoenix..."

That last one is the one that got them the nasty 'cease and desist' order from the AZ Fiduciary Commission, so they had to stop the ads."

'Tis an honor.

Nina at the 2004 wake for Hank Cookenboo, held at Sugar Daddy's.

A refugee from KWFM in Tucson and a remarkable audiophile with a huge knowledge of music, particularly folk. Working with old photos here, hoping for an update.

More vintage airchecks

For your listening pleasure while you browse or blog, we've just added some more vintage airchecks (in the sidebar at left), these from KDKB circa 1976. Not sure who the DJ is on these, but the eclectic selection of music should be pretty much the way you remember the early KDKB. Thanks to Bob Macheska, a former Phoenix listener now living in Ransom, PA, for sending in the CDs.

COWBOYS ON MARS? WHY NOT?

Peace Candle from Liz Boyle

Seashell image from Mars Rover

A couple of Bill's favorite books were "Stranger in A Stange Land" by Robert Heinlien and "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke. There seems to be buried deep within our collective conciousness or collective memory SOMETTHING that makes us think of and/or identify with Mars. There are some suggestions that Mars may have been our HOME in the waaaaaay distant past and that our arrival here on Earth may have something to do with the moon.

So... With the memory of Bill's intellectual interest in mind boys and girls, I am including these two links. I really believe he would want you to know about this, off-topic or not.

ANY enlightenment it presents can be in honor of his memory.

So..... Take a deep breath, remember 2001 and copy/paste one of these URL's into your broser.

KCAC Lives Photo Album...

Howdy!

I've made a few changes... in the left sidebar the link that used to be called Bill Compton Pictures has morphed into KCAC Lives Photo Album. It leads to the same album as before, but I've renamed and reordered the pictures, and added those that have recently been posted here. Please let me know if you can provide names for any of the "Unidentified" pictures at the end of the album. I'll try to keep up with things and make sure photos that get posted to the blog also get posted to the album, so we'll be able to find them all in one place.

Thanks, all y'all...

CHAT MODE for the KCAC Lives! community is possible anytime you are on this page. Really.

You may have missed it but our Webmaster Jimmy (who believes he is a journalist but doesn't realize he is a Webmaster), has hooked in a program called "Gabby" that will let you introduce, be introduced and (possibly) mutually seduced with anyone who is logged on to KCAC Lives! at the same time you are! Yes, you can just be friends without the seduction part.

HERE IS THE FUN AND TRICKY PART - YOU CAN "CHEAT"

You can save this URL to your favorites http://gabbly.com/kcaclives.blogspot.com/
and activate it at ANY time. Wait for Gabby chat to appear, enter your chat name then MINIMIZE the screen and go on with your regular surfing. When someone else from the KCAC community does the same thing, you will hear "log on tones" from Gabby. Just maximize the screen and say hi!

PLAY WITH GABBY It really is a fun program that you can make tall on the right of your screen, make wide and flat on the bottom and as with most chat programs, you can change your screen name. We have 50-100 QUALITY people logging in here every day. At least HERE you can count on people being in "your space" who are already in "Your Space"

DEJA'VU Then & Now Mugshot: WILLIAM EDWARD COMPTON/hendrix

ABSOLUTELY must get this one posted and shared.
This is WEC in 1967/68 at KVIL Dallas, well before KRUX/KCAC/KDKB. Hank was in news there, in fact he WAS the news department, if I remember. Bill did afternoon drive, I did mornings. During this time, Bill was under tremendous stress; "Her name was McGill and she called herself Lil - but everyone knew her as Nancy". Nancy's dad was ex-FBI and Nancy - though pretty as a picture, seemed to have a Death Wish- a complicated problem for Daddy to have to deal with....... and everybody else as well.

Combine that scenario with major-market radio station publicity and pressure and you come up with what I call this "gunfighter pose". Bill hated this pic, I thought it was great because it captured the essence of his "no nonsense" charisma.

It was done by some advertising agency and this was back in the days where Xerox copy macines were just becoming art media.

It was just a few months before The Migration to Phoenix.

Songs of the time; "Scarborough Fair" - Simon & Garfunkel "All Along The Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix.

By the way - for a YouTube/Hendrix rendition of "All Along The Watchtower", just click the mugshot headline masthead at the very top of this entry.

Energizing Our Community: KCAC Lives...The Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame... Radio Free Phoenix

Ahh, Jimmy Magahern. Your decision to start this blog is a little miracle. Your creation of KCAC Lives! has in turn created some incredibly meaningful memories that many of us had let migrate to the back of our brains. It's evident every day in the posts that people send here. What you took the time and energy to create has inspired a rebirth of our community. We are lucky indeed!

Bob Gately's post (scroll to the bottom) got me to thinking about the community we share, this blog and AMEHOF among other things. It leads me to comment on the concerns in Bob's heartfelt post:

Yes. this family of friends does grow. And it will keep on growing. You're right, any success can be a slippery slope. It's no doubt that the focus changes along with the world in which we live, and that this world has disconnected us from our essential selves. But I still believe that people from our "clan" like yourself, Danny, Russ, Marty. Alice and the rest of the folks who have had such success in their endeavors have a special outlook, and a place in their hearts that is wide open, still embracing the things Bill Compton and KCAC stood for.

Though I don't hang out with these folks I think I can assure you there is still a real, unique connection within the KCAC era 'clan.' Why, take yourself for example! And don't worry too much, I'm pretty sure Russ is still 'wonderful.' And sure, Danny Zelisko is a dynamo! But he hasn't lost his heart or love for the community. He's still here, after all.

You mentioned the need to promote local bands and promoting what's 'ours.' Well, the Danny Zelisko produced Jerry Riopelle New Years Eve show was phenomenal. Bob Meighan Band was the opener! They were great. What a nice trip down memory lane! Zelisko also was key along with Troy Lucketta (TESLA) in putting together the fabulous 'Drummerpalooza' Lissa Wales Benefit last year. Heart and soul. That's what it's about.

One of the exciting things about KCAC Lives and AMEHOF is that these two efforts complement each other. Both share the goal of bringing our Arizona community together. Both give us a place to express ourselves and to unify. And your own ideas and contributions to this blog certainly illustrate the dedication of those who care about our past and its part in our present lives. Who will forget how last year's 1st Az Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was simply incredible in its ability to bring the community together in a spirit of love, appreciation, celebration.

Perhaps people who weren't there don't yet understand the impact and importance of that event. But whoever was there saw that AMEHOF brought Arizona's music, arts and entertainment communities together on a scale and in a way this Valley has never seen. That AMEHOF event put Arizona on the map as a strong community of musicians, artists and entertainers who respect and promote our own in what was an often overwhelming day of wonder. Tears of joy, bittersweet memories and laughter filled an audience eager to see and be seen as a true community, heart and soul. They knew it was the real deal. How sad for those who couldn't be there to participate in that benchmark day.

Sometimes it's hard for us to recognize great things in ourselves. AMEHOF didn't get all the local press it deserved. But it was astonishing to 'google' the AZ Hall of Fame at that time and read the truly wonderful reviews and comments about the event from various print media and websites in Arizona and elsewhere. KCAC Lives started out with a small group of people and look at it now!

We've learned to minimize our efforts to bring people together in terms of the impact on our community. We've fought time, 'progress' and cynicism, expecting to be disappointed. Until Bill Compton and KCAC came along, this area had its collective head in the sand. When we lost that formidable, good force and all that came with it, of course we were scattered creatively, emotionally, physically.

But there's a new 'movement' that anyone who participates in this blog or was at the AMEHOF event can't deny or forget. This community counts on things like this blog and AMEHOF continuing to recognize and build upon the legacy that was born that Sunday. AMEHOF knows It has built a house of cards that we can't let fall. We are all part of it. Our community depends upon it. Those who lived through those times, even those who are new to AZ, could feel the vibe at last year's AMEHOF ceremony!

Like KCAC Lives, it celebrates what is at the core of our community, creatively. The AMEHOF event was a celebration of the unabashed pride we have in our community and for the success Arizona's own have achieved. KCAC Lives did it's part and more to make the event a success too, as did Radio Free Phoenix.

So the circle is NOT broken. And yes, I think this 'clan' of ours is a band of Movers and Shakers in the best sense. I deeply believe we are all people whose appreciation for our culture and the history of especially these last five decades is strong.

The AMEHOF ceremony nurtured that identity and resolve. So do KCAC Lives and RFP. All will continue to do so just as other things are developing to bring us back into the eye of our whirlwind. All of us staying involved, aware, and caring...that's what it takes.

So take heart. We've only just begun to shine a little light.

KCAC Photo Album Updated...

Hi!

Ron just emailed me a bunch of pictures, and I downloaded some that have been posted here recently, and then I uploaded them to the Bill Compton Pictures album. There are three pages of pictures now, so look for the 1, 2 and 3 links. There's also a link to that album in the Community section in the left sidebar. Some of the pictures don't have proper labels (e.g. 1-2-3 or something similar), so if you'd care to suggest a label for a picture, please email me and I'll change it. Also, if you have additional pictures you'd like me to post to the album, email those to me.

Thanks!

Attached is the house at 355 W. Camelback Road on Christmas Day 1970 (my old notes say it was a Friday). We moved to 2106 N. 24th St. a few months later where we stayed for a few more months preparing for KDKB's debut that fall. Does anyone have pix of the 24th St. house?

DEJA'VU Now & Then Mugshot; MARTY MANNING

earthworm2000@msn.com

"The Earthworm" - Marty joined KCAC while it was giving birth to KDKB. As you can see, Marty is much more "here" now, even as he was "there" then. The change of looks is a dimensional thing, having to do with creating one's reality and projecting one's self into it. Marty is the Master of and absolute definition of, Dry Humor. The religion - not the joke. He is the only person known to be able to salivate in three octaves without needing to wipe his chin or lips with a tissue. Not once.

DEJA'VU Now & Then Mugshot; SCOTT NICCOLSON

sbn5150@msn.com

KCAC's very first on-air DJ at Wallic's Music City. Scott has been a lifelong friend of many and seems to have a poetic insight into the Human Condition that very few people get to enjoy... or suffer from, depending on your point of view. The only detectible sign of aging in this man, is his Fu-Man-Chu marking in the streaking of his beard. His choice of playground equipment has become more sophisticated over the years.

When in the course of Human Events - it becomes necessary to "break format" and present things within the context of intent, you have the perfect rationalization for this particular mugshot.

This is a RARE version of a staff photo that was taken at the same photo-op as "The" definitive KCAC staff picture.

BACK ROW: Hank Cookenboo, Marty Manning, Bill Compton and Toad Hall (Gary Kinsey).

MIDDLE ROW: Dave Briggs, Tommy Vascocue, Jim Murray and Kent Usery(sp).

FRONT ROW: Steve Zind, Lynne Adams, George Soderquist (reclining), Carol --???? and Frank Lehmann (Frank Bennet) who transitionally took on the "Aunt Fran" personna and enjoyed a fabulously successful radio career in San Fransisco.. Follow the picture blow-up and close-up to get the transition.

PLEASE EMAIL THE NAMES marked with ???? and I will edit them in later. I was not at the station at the time and honestly, don't recall a couple of the guys..

THAT HAVING BEEN DONE I am honoring Frank's request here for the copy on his mugshot. I hope I haven't messed him up with too much preamble but this particular picture is remarkable. Thanks, Fran. Love the hair, by the way.
~~~~~~~~~~~
KCAC gofer/intern, Frank Lehmann, spent 30 years on the air in LA & San Francisco as 'Uncle Frank Bennett'. In 2002 she became 'Aunt Fran'. Media coverage was huge and listeners were 98% supportive but radio execs didn't want to hear about it.
She currently volunteers with Silicon Valley non-profits while trying to rebuild her career. Her radio package can be viewed at < www.auntfran.com >. For her personal
DEJA'VU Now & Then Mugshot; THE COMPTON FAMILY
cglenn2@cox.net
VERY RARE picture on the left of Bill Compton long before the radio days of KVIL in Dallas, KRUX, KCAC and KDKB in Phoenix. This pic is about 1966 or even earlier, possibly before his tenure with Hank Cookenboo at the radio station in Tyler. Even then, the charisma was evident. June Johnson at the time was writing poetry and songs that Bill was a part of.
To the right, a picture of the main members of the Compton Family, although there was an older brother if memory serves. This shot I believe was taken at the Hubble Street House about a block away to the East from Dan Covington's and a couple of blocks North of the Alwun House. Jean Compton "The Lady" is shown in this photo, taken in 1974. Carole Compton is on the right. Probably one of the most cordial, famously hospitable families you could know.
Now........ Aren't you glad you came?
The dog's name is "Hardcore" I just wanted a name that would get attention when I yelled it out my door, down the street, from Bill. The whole neighborhood, would hear the tall guy, yelling "HARD CORE!"
A Cellphone Live Stones Concert: Straight From The Mixing Board
(Summary from digg.com): "With technology from Single Touch, subscribers can use their phones to listen to a live Rolling Stones concert in Paris. The clarity depends, in part, on the quality of your phone's speakers. But the call isn't to some Stones groupie holding up a phone from the bleachers. This connection goes straight to the band's mixing board."
What do you think, gang? Me, I'll miss climbing to the top of A Mountain to hear the Stones play Sun Devil Stadium (this time, they inaugurate the new Cardinals Stadium in Glendale on Nov. 8). Are we getting so old we want to literally phone-in our concert experiences?
KCAC, Early KDKB Sadly Missing from Ultimate Radio Database
www.440int.com has become the preeminent radio data base on the web. Stations like KOY, KRIZ and KRUX have established a notable history on the site. Sadly, KCAC is non existent and KDKB is underwhelmingly represented.
On behalf of us radio fans who believe this history is important, I'd love to see you KCAC/early KDKB staffers represented. C'mon ! It's a farce that the K-Lite gang has a more established presence on the web than our beloved Phoenix rock radio pioneers.
Please consider contributing your information to this site. I hope that someone can add Bill Compton's and Toad's name to the roster.
Here's some info on the site:
Boss Jock Johnny Williams left radio in 1995 to consult, freelance and take in some Hawaiian sun and surfing -- Web surfing that is. That's when he started 440: Satisfaction as a hobby.It began with Johnny listing the radio stations that he had worked at and the people he had worked with. The initial response was so great that Johnny moved 440: Satisfaction from his personal site to www.440.com (and www.440int.com) and started 440 International Inc.By the turn of the century, 440: Satisfaction had become the radio industry's genealogy of people past and present: DJs, newspersons, engineers, sales and administrative personnel, etc. and where they are now. Literally thousands of radio stars and unsung heroes are included, with more names and their favorite stories added every day.
Keep the torch burning and rock on !
"Train-wreck" radio - a return to free-form?
"It's like listening to a middle-aged drunkard's iPod set to shuffle, but the Jack FM radio format is spreading across the dial," says Wired magazine in an article about the increasingly popular format, heard in Phoenix on stations like The Peak.
The article suggests one key to the format's success - particularly among older listeners - is its "liberal use of 'train-wreck editing,' allowing songs from completely different genres to play back to back -- Deee-Lite followed by Steve Miller Band, for example.
"Edison Media Research's Sean Ross says train-wreck editing was initially thought to alienate listeners, but is today seen as part of Jack's appeal.
"'When done well, these segues are a throwback to some of the great radio of the 1970s,' he says."
The article goes on to say, "It's in sharp contrast to conventional programming logic, where small, genre-specific playlists are thought to attract specific target audiences, and songs are repeated over and over so as to become quickly familiar to listeners."
What do you folks think? Can the eclecticism of early 70's FM be replicated with a large library of tunes set to what seems like a random shuffle? Do you ever get that same feeling, listening to your own iPod on "shuffle"? Or is there a lot more to the equation than that?
AZ Rock Radio Historians! What Do You Remember?! (before we all forget!)
There are zillions of really interesting stories about the Compton days. You all surely have some great stories to share. This is the place to do that, for sure! I know I'm not the only one who is interested!
So, go ahead already! Reminisce! Stir up a little of that magic KCAC spell and let's see if we can get some of the good memories pulsing through us again. So many of you have such deep ties to Bill and KCAC.
I am wondering about what you remember from that time. Like what's the weirdest thing you ever heard on KCAC? What were the most memorable broadcasts you heard on KCAC. And the funniest and most insightful things you ever heard said on KCAC? Your favorite commercial? (I liked the "Sugar Blues" - anyone remember that?) Whose live music did you hear on the air that you remember best? What kind of stereo did you listen to KCAC on? In the late 60's I'd listen to Bill on KRUX on my cherished Panasonic AM/FM (!) Radio with the nifty fold down turntable! I could take it anywhere, and I did!
I'm ready to recharge my sense of humor; swear off the news; download all the KCAC stuff; pull out the Firesign Theatre LPs for good measure and laugh myself silly. Any takers?
American Love Song
(Finished to the backdrop of the historic KCAC Fourth of July collage-read Jimmy's post below-this is dedicated to Bill Compton, the community, and the legacy he left us to carry on, in the spirit of patriotism and love for America)
A PATRIOT'S LOVE SONG
by Mariah Fleming
Once safe to breathe, there's no blue sky; it's sick with acid rain
Mountains have been sliced off like boils for streets with homey names
On city streets where birds once sang, we inhale poison fumes
to a constant soundtrack in our lives that cannot mask the gloom
In theaters built like playing cards stacked up against all odds
actors drunk on White House dreams lead massacres like gods
Once Washington was Camelot, now it's Valley of the Dolls
And where our Eternal Flame was lit, only darkness falls
Politicians swear, with hand to God, to keep us free and strong
then drown us in false promises that placate us along
our journey to the future here in demographics land
where freedom is just a logo we buy at the t-shirt stands.
Oh corporate America, we bow our heads to thee
Will you sponsor every word in what's left of our libraries?
Will you decide whose thoughts are worthy of song or printed page?
who's the 'target audience' and whose ideas you'll wage?
America, land of the free, is it really thee, whose red
is blood that's spilled by kids in schools; on bombed out streets?
Whose blue's the bruised integrity of cherished freedom's heart
and whose only stars are the stars that shine on our TVs after dark?
America the beautiful, can things be what they seem?
Filled with dread, asleep, awake, we fear we've lost our dreams
We've stripped the stars off of our flag, it burns in effigy,
now the only stars are the stars that shine every night on our TV's
America the beautiful, is it really thee whose
only stars are the stars that shine every night on our TV's?
Independence Day Collage
“Some people are saying to celebrate on a day like today is very hypocritical. Because we are engaged in things that many people in the country disagree with.”
Hear more:
Most of those who frequent this blog have already heard this broadcast (heck it’s the only CD of airchecks I have! If anyone’s got more, please send!). But on this Independence Day, Bill Compton’s commentary and music collage from July 4, 1970 certainly bears repeating.
Compton was addressing the difficulty of joining in the flag-waving during a time the country was bitterly divided over a war and the president in charge (sound familiar?). At the time, the sides were divided not so much by red and green states as by which side of age 30 they fell on (kids, look up "generation gap" in Wikipedia). Ironically, of course, anyone listening to this audio who remembers hearing Compton on the radio is now on the other side of that gap – whoa! A bit of a mind-blower in itself. Nevertheless, Compton’s plea for tolerance and understanding between people of different beliefs sounds as urgent a message now as it did then, and should be required listened on this day.
Click on "Click to start" in the above playlist to hear the full 49-minute segment.
Media Snoozes While Supreme Court Justice Warns of American Dictatorship
When a Supreme Court Justice is worried about our government maybe we should pay attention?
NPR's Nina Totenberg was present at a talk that resigned Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor gave at Georgetown University in March 2006. Totenberg aired a story about the talk that has otherwise gotten no real media attention. Arizona's own O'Connor, speaking with passion and authority, warned about the "beginnings of dictatorship" in America. The first woman to serve on the High Court wouldn't allow her actual words to be broadcast which is chilling considering what she had to say. The Reagan appointee, a moderate and an American icon, shocked her audience with an astonishing wake up call which the media has all but ignored.
O'Connor all but named names in thinly veiled attacks on former House majority leader Tom DeLay and Texas Sen. John Cornyn. She ended her talk with a stunning warning. Pointing to the experiences of developing countries and formerly Communist countries, where interference with an independent judiciary has allowed dictatorship to flourish, O’Connor said we must be ever vigilant against those who would strong-arm the judiciary into adopting their preferred policies. It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship she said, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings.
O'Connor told her Georgetown audience that judges can make presidents, Congress and governors "really really mad," and that if judges don't make people angry, they aren't doing their job. But she said judicial effectiveness is "premised on the notion that we won't be subject to retaliation for our judicial acts." While hailing the American system of rights and privileges, she noted that these don't protect the judiciary, that "people do."
Then, she took aim at former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. She quoted his attacks on the courts at a meeting of the conservative Christian group 'Justice Sunday' last year, when DeLay took out after the courts for its rulings on abortion, prayer, and the Terry Schiavo case. DeLay was incensed that the federal courts had applied Congress' one-time-only statute about Schiavo as it was written, not, said O'Connor, as the Congressman wished it were written. The response to this 'f'lagrant display of judicial restraint' by the Supreme Court? The congressman blasted the courts, said O'Conner, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
It gets worse, she said, noting that DEATH THREATS against judges are increasing. It doesn’t help, she said, when a high-profile senator suggests there may be a connection between violence against judges and decisions that the senator disagrees with. It was Texas Sen. John Cornyn who made that statement after a Georgia judge was murdered in court and the family of a federal judge in Illinois murdered in the judge's home.
O’Connor observed that there have been lots of suggestions lately for "judicial reforms" like recommendations for the massive impeachment of judges, stripping the courts of jurisdictions and cutting judicial budgets to punish offending judges. Any of these might be debatable, she said, as long as they are NOT retaliation for decision that political leaders disagree with. "I am against judicial reforms driven by nakedly partisan reasoning" O'Connor said.
(O'Connor resigned from the bench to care for her gravely ill husband.)
RAINBOW CHILDREN BUSTED - NO RIGHTS
Somebody has to die befor you youngsters get off your butts and protest?
No surprise - FOUR totally harmless kids died at Kent State - assasinated on the spot before OUR generation asked "What the hell is going on here?"
Since the early 1970's "The Gathering of Tribes" - The Rainbow Children, about 500 strong have amassed in celebration. A party, if you would. No more. This 30-year ESTABLISHED celebration has been busted in the sacred name of Homeland Security.
Think of it as Fascism......... add Racism. No, don't you dare say "Nazi!" Don't you dare.
If We Could Turn Back Time...
Jimmy sure hit the nail on the head about the comments! It's so great to see them all on the page. Thanks for making that change! It makes a huge difference to the feeling of timeliness and group particpation.
I highly recommend going back through all the comments beginning with when Jimmy created this blog! The archives are full of great stuff. It's like our own Time Machine in there! This blog has had some surprising readers...and comments. There are comments in past archives that are pretty recent, too.
I discovered some truly amazing links to cherished bits of AZ history (like an entire site with newspaper and audio clips devoted to the 'Love Workshop' on KDKB in 1976!! ) It's a blast to read and hear all that stuff! Just because a topic is somewhere back in the archives doesn't mean we can't revisit it.
Wouldn't it be a kick for us to go back thru and pull our own favorite topics from the archives and post them up front again? Or if you've commented on something way back when that got lost in the mix, put it up again! It's all about the comments like Jimmy said...and the commentary is rich!! Whaddya all think?
It's all about the Comments!
Comments now will appear directly below each post on the main page. This means anyone can join in the discussion - or even start their own - by just clicking on the "Post a comment" link, and it'll all appear right here (no more opening a pop-up window to get to the good stuff). On days where there's no post, we'll probably just put "Start a talk" at the top and let the first commenter get the ball rolling. Hopefully this will get more people conversing on this site. Have fun!
Another Rebirth Staffer Found!
Aha! We did it! We found another Rebirth staffer! Mariah and I were talking (well, emailing...) about Rebirth, and she did a web search for Leif (G.), Joe and Michelle's son. Found a MySpace site for a band with a Leif (G.) in it, and I sent a message. Leif passed it along to Michelle, who now goes by her first name, Orlena, and she just sent me an email, to which I promptly replied, and among other things suggested she visit KCAC Lives and leave us a note. Hopefully she'll get around to that soon. She had some sad news, though: Joe passed away earlier this month from cancer complications - he'd been living in Phoenix, too... so close yet so far away.
Peace to all who enter...
My brush with Russ
A lifelong dream is realized: I finally get to write something about Wonderful Russ, and get it published in Phoenix Magazine. No pictures of him, unfortunately. But it’s in an article titled “As Seen On TV,” and it’s in the June issue of Phoenix (“on newsstands now!”).
Here’s a couple excerpts from the article, and a link to where it’s reproduced online:
His face is so well known to Valley residents that when Russell Shaw turns sideways, the unfamiliar angle can be a bit jarring, like catching a glimpse of the dark side of the moon. From the side, Shaw's bug eyes, rounded face and short, gray hair oddly resemble the late Rodney Dangerfield's. But when he turns back to smile at you, you instantly see the billboard, the realty signs, the face on TV that airs on four locally run stations at a cost of more than $600,000 a year. He's the Realtor famous for his "No Hassle Listings."
"I'm on TV a lot," says Shaw from his surprisingly modest ranch-style home in one of the cozy neighborhoods north of Paradise Valley Mall. (His home office, staffed today by four women – including his radiant wife, Wendy – is located in an add-on room.)
"And I get recognized all the time. Usually it's this stuck attention thing. Someone looks at me for a long time, and you can just feel it. Next thing you know, they're walking over saying, 'Aren't you that real estate guy from TV?"
Shaw understands the fascination. After all, he once called his wife, practically out of breath with excitement, to tell her he had just passed car dealer Lou Grubb on Camelback Road.
"I called Wendy and said, 'You're not gonna believe this, but I just drove past Lou Grubb!" Shaw remembers, laughing jovially. "She was like, 'Yeah, I can see what you've got going on today' But hey I mean, Lou Grubb! He's an icon."
Russell Shaw got his start in commercials by making fun of them. His distinctive baritone voice was first heard on the hippy-dippy early '70s FM station KDKB, where, as the self-made celebrity "Wonderful Russ,” Shaw heartily endorsed a moving company he'd never used (which happened to share a parking lot with KDKB's broadcasting towers) and gave his authoritative-sounding stamp of approval to the various stereo stores and head shops hip enough to advertise on the station.
In the mid-'80s, Wonderful Russ resurfaced, doing joke commercials on KSLX for his pal Bob Boze Bell, and, as part of the bargain, sneaking in a couple of genuine commercials for his new realty business.
Initially a lot of longtime residents scratched their heads upon hearing Shaw's own spots, failing to find any of the usual Firesign Theater-like humor in the bits.
"People would literally be calling the station, saying, 'I don't get the joke," says Shaw, whose well-modulated tones still trigger warm flashbacks for legions of former Valley hippies. "Like, 'There's something funny there, but I don't know what it is.'
"I suppose there is something funny about me doing my own TV ads now, with this huge media budget," Shaw adds, bursting into one of his infectious belly laughs. "Not that funny. But funny."
In Memoriam-Vince Welnick
June 04, 2006
The Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is saddened to learn that Arizona has lost a key member of its historic rock music scene. News of keyboardist Vince Welnick's death on June 2nd, at the age of 55, stunned Valley fans, who were looking forward to the upcoming induction of The Tubes into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame.
Beginning when Welnick was a member of the beloved band the Beans, Phoenix watched as his career ignited in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. The Beans relocated to San Francisco, decided to rename the group the Tubes, and created music history. As a member of the Tubes, Welnick attained success during a period when record companies were deluged with rock and roll hopefuls. Political and social turmoil among America’s youth inspired an enormous wealth of music.
Welnick left his indelible mark on The Tubes, appearing on cuts like "White Punks on Dope", "She's a Beauty" and ""Talk To Ya Later". He was known not only for his deft handling of keyboards but also for his unusually skillful vocal range. His discography includes work with a diverse number of artists, including Todd Rundgren, Dick Dale, Merl Saunders, and Steve Kimock.
Welnick was a member of the Grateful Dead from 1990 to 1995. He took the gig as the Grateful Dead’s keyboard player amid a rash of recycled rumors. Several of the Grateful Dead’s previous keyboard players had died, leading some fans to regard the position as a curse. Welnick, far from being cursed, rose, to fame during an unprecedented rock and roll era.
After Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, he formed his own group, the Missing Man Formation. He was also a coveted guest artist on the "jam band" circuit. Recently Welnick had teamed up with Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart as a featured member of the Mickey Hart Band. Welnick was scheduled to perform this month.
The Tubes are among those voted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame for 2006. The group will be inducted into the hall of fame during a ceremony to be held at a historic Phoenix venue, the Celebrity Theatre. The event will be open to the public. Further information is available at the Arizona Music Hall of Fame.org website.
Vince Welnick leaves behind many long time friends and fans in Arizona. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his loved ones.
Check out the "comments"
Sometimes the best stuff on this blog ends up buried in the "comments" sections after each new topic posting. Case in point: the post below, where a conversation sparked by Mariah's ruminations about a spam sender somehow wanders off into two old buddies comparing notes on different mining claims they each own out around Wickenburg way.
So if you ever check in on this blog are disappointed to find no new posts to read, click on the "comments" links. You may drop in on some conversations that veer totally off into some surprising new tangents!
Poser or Poet?
This isn't the 'Hide and Seek Blog." But recently the blog's been caught up in a silly game with spam that gets sillier every day. So, on the assumption that the spammer is a 'who' here's an idea...
The bogus ads are a sleeper, but the stuff tacked on to the end of the posts is worth a look. It's always what appears to be a sort of stream of consciousness 'poetry' that jabs at the status quo...or perhaps it's just some weird set of random words that have an unintended relationship (just giving the benefit of the doubt to the so called human mind.)
The thing is, the blog will automatically delete spam no matter how creative some of it might be. So how about coming out of hiding? If you want to participate in this blog, leave a comment in the blog "comments" section. It gets pretty interesting at times. Sometimes comments wind up on the site redone as posts and ouila! New topics.
This site is dedicated to some truly amazing people who have given a lot to our community. Some of them have died, and the KCAC Lives Blog is a sort of living tribute to them. Please respect the intentions of the blog. Feel free to leave a comment, open a dialogue...that's what the blog is here for. But get on or get off the bus, y'know? There's room for anyone to get on the bus but you have to come through the door like the rest of us travelers.
Woodstock Pictures!
Hi!
Bob Gately has provided us with a set of Woodstock pictures. I tried to post them here but discovered I couldn't upload more than five in one post, so I made a Webshots album for them instead: Woodstock Pictures.
Bob, thanks - and if you have additional input on these, please post a comment! And thanks to you, Mariah, for forwarding them on...
Anonymous emailing to blog disabled... WRONG!
Hi!
I think I figured it out... each of us has our own logon id for the site, and Jimmy created an account for kcac.fans, which allowed anyone to post anonymously to the blog by emailing to kcac.group(at)blogger.com. I've deleted that member account, so it won't work any more. If any of you want to be able to email posts to the blog, click on the "Blogger" icon in the upper left corner of the blog, click the Settings tab, click Email, and complete the email to blogger address. Make sure the Publish button is checked. I think this will stop the spam postings. Have a great day!
WEIGH IN ON THIS GREAT IDEA!!
Arizona has a fantastic music history that is mostly hidden away in personal collections. Bob Gately has a terrific idea so I've taken the liberty of reprinting his comment (from the 'Emailing Spam' topic in comments section.)
"There are a whole lot of images of our past that rest in the archives of photographer, Tom Story. Tom was a high school press guy that I gave backstage passes to back in the olden days. He has an awesome collection of early (60/70's) Rock n Roll concerts and such. Tom is now our forest fire photographer but has maintained his collection of early Az Rock n Roll.
Tom must have shot 10 rolls at our Janis Joplin show at Tempe stadium in '69 and has some great shots of Annie Leibowitz shooting Goose Creek Symphony at our KRIZ Beach Boy concert at Phoenix Municipal stadium to raise the money for the first Terros ambulance in 1970...??? Somebody might make a interesting portfolio of his work and MAKE A STATEMENT ON OUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE EVOLUTION OF MUSIC IN OUR VALLEY, AND THE PLANET.
I just spoke to Tom and he's ready and willing to make some prints for posterity. How 'bout a show at the Icehouse next fall ? Spoke to Charlie Gearhart the other night and he was going to talk to the boys about doing a show here in town..It would be the first since New Times profiled them in 92." - Bob Gately
Now that's a fabulous idea, no?? "Make a statement" indeed!! It's such a cool idea and It reinforces how fortunate we are that Jimmy Magahern started this great site. Through Jimmy Magahern's efforts many of the people who have ties to Arizona's musical past have a place to come together, reminisce and remind each other what an indelible time we lived through. Also, seems like it'd be a tribute to Jimmy's site for us all to get behind this idea.
So, what do you think, 'KCAC LIVES' family??? We can help make this a reality! Another 'HAPPENING' is long overdue...just about 4 decades overdue!!!
Emailing spam to the blog...
Hi!
I've been deleting a number of "spam" posts, several in the last few days, and I'm wondering if any of you post by email. If so, that's cool, we can leave that feature enabled - but if not, then perhaps we could disable this option to reduce the junk ad posts? There's also an option called Word Verification, which would require a poster to enter a sequence of letters and/or numbers to ensure they're really a live person rather than a spamming program - I don't think we need to do this, at least not yet, as most or all of the recent offending entries have been posted by email, but it's available if we need it.
Jimmy, you're the founder, and probably most familiar with the issues involved here, what do you think? It hasn't really become a problem for me to delete the posts, just a minor annoyance at this point, but if we can nip it in the bud that would be nice.
Also looking for any feedback from other members here...
My brother just rented the Woodstock movie again... gotta watch that every once in a while, don't-cha-know.
Hope everyone's havin' a good night...
Phone it in!
Testing out some more new technology here. Now you can phone in what you'd like to say on this blog, and it will magically show up in the above menu as a playable audio file (click the first message to hear my awkward greeting).
Here's the number to call (use Skype on your computer, and there'll be no long distance charges):
+1-415-856-0205
When prompted for your phone number, type:
914-636-9970
For the PIN, type:
7673283
Give it a try! It's fun, and old pals who visit here will be able to hear your voice!
(For anyone curious about the phone number and PIN, it's actually the Petrie's phone number on the old Dick Van Dyke Show - before TV went with all 555 area codes! - and the PIN can be remembered by typing "rosebud" on your touchtone phone. Devout Petrie-heads will pick up on the reference. Think of it as the Van Dyke Code.)
Old sounds, new tech
Below is a neat little player for listening to podcasts on a webpage. It's from a site called Odeo, which seems intended to make posting podcasts as easy as Flickr makes sharing photos, or YouTube makes sharing videos.
Anyway, here's a sample from the Firesign Theater's podcast, which includes both recent and ancient comedy bits from the troupe. This clip will undoubtedly be familiar to anyone who used to listen to KCAC or the early KDKB:
Inspiration that's a bargain...
After reading Andy Olson's info about Dan Bern and listening to audio clips I'm a believer. And I just learned that right now the prices of "My Country II" "Anthems" and "Quitting Science" have been reduced. I'm gonna grab 'em before they're gone. I suggest anyone who is into inspired social/political commentary via the art of songwriting definitely check it out. The link to clips is in Andy's post of a few days ago. Link to sale:
Neil Young-Qwest's New Spokesman?
Check out Neil Young's tv ad for 'Living With War.' I saw it after 10pm on CBS or the Comedy Channel yesterday. It's simple and bold. Just the graphics of his album and the voiceover "YOU'RE THE DECIDER!!" How cool is that? Has anyone else seen it? I'm curious to know how many stations will accept his ad? Interesting to find out...
Speaking of free speech, who'd of thunk it...both the former and current CEO of Qwest refused to hand over phone records illegally to the government (as opposed to ATT, Bell South, Verizon.) Qwest has had a bad reputation for many reasons, but this time, they did it right and they deserve props, no? If you write to them they will actually reply!! You can be sure they'll hear from those who accuse them of being "against America's fight against terrorism!"
Bob Dylan: radio host
If you've got XM satellite radio, perhaps you've been catching Bob Dylan's radio show, where the legend hosts an hour long show tied around a different theme each week.
If you don't have XM, you can (at least for the moment) catch the latest program on this page. If it's not already playing, click the player in the left column, under, "Bob Dylan's Radio Show."
This guy has potential. Probably woulda fit in good with the KCAC staff . . .
Neil Young-Buying Freedom in the 21st Century?
Leave it to RFP’s Andy Olson. He turns us on to inspired music and isn't afraid to say what he thinks about what's happening to freedom in America. Is it an exaggeration to say that what Radio Free Phoenix is doing is an act of patriotism? How many in music radio have the courage to share personal beliefs? Olson's comments about Neil Young illustrate RFP's dedication to changing the status quo. Neil Young's iconic status and wealth may assure that his outstanding "Living With War" will get played on corporate radio. But what about others? Artist 'blacklists' are part of a 21st century 'McCarthy Era.' Supporting Neil Young, supporting Radio Free Phoenix...is supporting freedom. How much is that worth to us?
Today's radio is a dead end. Artists struggle to be heard, even some well established ones. RFP found a way around the dead end by creating radio that is not mindless and impersonal. Anyone who listened to Andy Olson on Valley airwaves during the last couple of decades knows he's an individual with a mind of his own. And he is an encyclopedia of musical knowledge. From the well known to the infinitesimally obscure, Andy Olson is the ‘go to’ guy. So RFP can offer up gems like the back stories, personal anecdotes and history behind songs and the times they represent. RFP is a living chronicle of our musical and social history. How much is that worth to us?
Bill Compton was legendary for creating unforgettable musical and motivating moments in Arizona radio. KCAC's relationship to listeners was a personal one. So is RFP's. Some thirty years later those KCAC memories still evoke a visceral reaction and RFP continues in that tradition. I'll always be proud that I was given the opportunity to be a small part of it. We would likely have none of the courageous, socially conscious songs we cherish if the media monopolies that have spawned satellite radio had been legal decades ago. Without the determination and honesty of RFP, radio as it was meant to be in the ‘good old USA’ would be part of the 'Antiques Roadshow.'
President Bush has said "you can't put a price on freedom." He's right. The value of freedom is immeasurable. But while the 21st Century has been hailed as the "new communications age" freedom appears to be something that may cease to exist...unless we support freedom with our voices and our pocketbooks.
Even More on Neil Young's Living With War
Whatever your politics or whatever you think about Neil Young, he's exercising his freedom of speech, a freedom which seems to have been run into the ground the last several years. When people take a recording artist to task because of what they wrote or sang of a political nature, then there's a problem. In addition to the Young record, back in 2004, singer-songwriter, Dan Bern release an 8 song CD called My Country II: Music To Beat Bush By. With songs like Tyranny, After The Parade, The Torn Flag & Bush Must Be Defeated, Dan Bern also stepped up to the plate to let his voice be heard. Here's a link to the Dan Bern discography & lyric archives.
More on Neil's Living With War album...
A nice article by Lynn Saxberg at the Ottowa Citizen:
"Get set for the Summer of Protest. With the blast of rock on his powerful new record, Living With War, Neil Young is issuing a cry that has the potential to turn moms, dads and misfits alike into peace activists.
It's a sharp-edged, urgent manifesto for our time, a message that is delivered with such passion that it will resonate across the demographics and quite likely serve as a unifying voice for the growing dissatisfaction with the policies of U.S. President George Bush."
Whatever Happened to Conor Oberst?
Conor Oberst is one of the "missing" young artists Neil Young was hoping to find when he gave up his search and wrote his own great new songs. It would be something if Young would tour with Oberst as his opener. But it's not surprising that Neil Young probably had never heard of Conor Oberst (aka 'Bright Eyes.') Conor Oberst appeared only once, on Leno last year, to sing his powerful song about Bush's policies.
It was amazing that he got away with doing the material, but he did perform it solo with his guitar, so perhaps NBC didn't realize what he was going to do until it was over! The audience was awed by his brave and heartfelt delivery. He received a whilrwind of applause and then, pretty much...POOF!! It's no big surprise though when the airwaves are run by corporate thugs whose money lines politician's pockets. It's just one more reason why stations like Radio Free Phoenix need our support. Without them we wouldn't hear a lot of the music that's being done today.
So many people are bummed out by censorship, monopolization of the arts, etc. and feel powerless to do anything about it. Yeah, the system has got us por las bolas. But right here in our own backyard we have an Arizona beacon of freedom. We have free airwaves as they were meant to be, and a huge variety of uncensored music and info about artists...all on Radio Free Phoenix. Each of us can be part of saving an important piece of America's culture-the music we love-by supporting Radio Free Phoenix. RFP needs community support now just like the legendary KCAC did so many years ago. Wouldn't it feel good to look back and think, hey, I was there and I did something to support another legend in the making...RFP!
So after you buy your Neil Young cd, maybe you can take a minute and send RFP a few bucks. Or better yet use the link on RFP's site to buy your cds. RFP receives a percentage of each sale. What could be easier? And you can do two good things at one time! RFP also has some cool bumper stickers and other stuff for sale. And if anyone knows what's happening with Conor Oberst these days, it's no doubt RFP's Andy Olson.
"WHEN THE PRESIDENT TALKS TO GOD" by Conor Oberst
When the President talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s' rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the President talks to God?
When the President talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God says ever change his mind?
When the President talks to God?
When the President talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed?
When the President talks to God?
When the President talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop?
"We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke."
"No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't!
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke."
That's what God recommends.
When the President talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade?
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess God just calls a spade a spade
When the President talks to God
When the President talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That the voice is just inside his head?
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own BS?
When the President talks to God?
I doubt it
I doubt it
Neil Young's "Living With War"
In what may be the coolest move yet in a long career of coolness, Neil Young has made all ten tracks of his essential new album, "Living With War" available for free over the Internet and is encouraging websites to post this link to the player page.
You guys gotta hear this album. Young recorded it during an impassioned nine day creative streak and decided to make it immediately available online - to the surprise of even his record company, Reprise, which was still busy promoting his seven-month-old album, "Prairie Wind," and the Jonathan Demme-directed concert film, "Heart of Gold," which hit theaters just last month.
Clearly, Young is on a roll, and this album rocks. Listen, listen, listen!
And after you get the music playing, read the official blog page about the project. From that page:
"I was waiting for someone to come along, some young singer 18 to 22 years old, to write these songs and stand up," Young said. "I waited a long time. Then, I decided that maybe the generation that has to do this is still the '60s generation. We're still here."
A Fly on the Wall at the White House
"A liberal activist group's $1.3 million ad campaign criticizing four Republican House members for voting in support of "energy and big oil companies" was rejected Monday by NBC stations. The ads contend that the four GOP lawmakers — Reps. Chris Chocola in Indiana's 2nd district, Thelma Drake in Virginia's 2nd district, Nancy Johnson in Connecticut's 5th district and Deborah Pryce in Ohio's 15th district — are taking money from oil and energy companies and then supporting laws that reward those companies." (from the 'huffingtonpost' blog)
(Through my connections at the White House I received this transcript of a conversation held in the Oval Office when they got word of NBC's refusal to run the ad)
(Rove listening to the television in the Oval Office)
ROVE: Well, holy shit! This makes my day! Check it out, Dick! Those MoveOn.Org asholes got screwed by NBC.
CHENEY: Hell, those jackasses deserve to get screwed. Big time! I still can't believe the tv networks are afraid of us when our approval ratings suck so bad! Unbefuckinlievable! They oughta watch tv once in awhile! (raucous laughter)
ROVE: Well, I'm damned proud to say we've always intimidated the hell outta the media and we haven't lost our touch!
(Rove high fives Cheney prompting Bush to look up from his desk)
BUSH: Hey dudes, have a brewski and fill me in on what we're so happy about!
ROVE: An ad by Move.On.org about us not taking money from Big Oil in exchange for doing their bidding
BUSH: Well hell, that's great news buddies! They're gonna run an ad about us here not taking money from oil companies! That's perfect timimg!
(Rove and Cheney look bewildered)
BUSH: Dudes, dontcha remember, I just told America in my Union of the United States address that America is too dependent on oil!!
ROVE: Yes sir, but you didn't really mean it!!
BUSH: I didn't?!? You real sure about that, K.B? It just don't sound right. Jesus wouldn't of done that!
CHENEY: Nothing to worry about Mr. President! You talked to Jesus about what to say right before the speech and He told you. You're just the President who's going on the tv to spread God's word.
BUSH: Right. Yeah. A-ok. So long as I'm doin' God's work anything goes.
ROVE: Right Mr. President. Praise Jesus!!
BUSH: Speakin' o' Jesus, lets hold hands and say a prayer of thanks to God for all the guidance we've been given.
(Cheney and Rove start to fidget around in their pockets)
BUSH: Dick, you start the prayer. You shot an old guy in the face and the guy went on tv and apologized to you, bro! If that's not a god damn miracle I dunno what is!
(Suddenly Rove and Cheney's cell phones simultaneously ring)
ROVE: Holy shit! I'm sorry Mr. President but this is urgent! I have to leave!
CHENEY: Crap! Me too! Keep up the good work, Mr. President! And God bless!
Peace,
Mariah
Marty's AZ Hall of Fame!
Marty,
Those of you who have contributed so much to that incredible era (the KCAC/KDKB family so to speak) in Arizona's music history have given us much to cherish. Never underestimate what you all mean to the Valley. It is so important for you to be seen and heard. You are all part of a living legacy.
I hope you will all attend the next Az Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. If you haven't checked out the AMEHOF web site lately, AMEHOF is in the process of updating it (azmusichalloffame.org) Soon there will be a picture section with archival AMEHOF photos, photos of the last induction ceremony, photos of the Advisory Board event that was held this month and much more.
The AZ MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT HALL OF FAME is going strong in spite of seeming to be mum since last year's induction. For instance, in December AMEHOF elected Rich Hazelwood, owner of the Celebrity Theatre, as the new AMEHOF Board of Director's President. With the AMEHOF Board putting their heads together and their noses to the grindstone, it's full speed ahead!
Lots of great changes and surprises are in store. The Celebrity is a perfect fit for AMEHOF. Those of you who have been in the Valley since the 1960's know the historic relevance of the Celebrity to the music scene over the years. At the New Years Eve Jerry Riopelle concert, Rich Hazelwood auctioned off two guitars and raised in the neighborhood of $30,000 for AMEHOF. And that's just the beginning.
Thanks for being such a big part of what matters.
Recent gathering
(Photo: Steve Zind & Marty Manning at KCAC studio on 24th Street shortly before move to KDKB, August 1981)
Last Friday (March 10) a group of us got together at the Duck & Decanter. Steve Zind was visiting (and escaping the snow) from Vermont where he works for Vermont Public Radio.  Of course we know that all radio in Vermont is Public Radio and everyone wears Birkenstocks.  Nonetheless it was nice to see him.
Listen to this list of luminaries who happened by:  Wonderful Russ, Carole Compton Glenn, Mike Goodman, Kent Usry, Julie Flanigan, and the fabled Jim Murray as well as the even more fabled Bob Gateley.  I'm sure I missed somebody.  A highlight was listening to some great live music from our old friends Bob Meighan, Norm Pratt, and Dick Furlow.  They sound great and it was such a treat to hear beautiful songs done well.  Make sure you catch them when you get a chance.
Click Here for Access to Wolfgang's Vault!
Be ready for an overload error message. Wolfgang was Bill Graham - legendary promotor and concertmeister. He never got rid of the extra promo stuff. Tickets, T-shirts, photos and on and on. They moved it all a couple of years ago in 40-foot trailers like the ones you see on the roads known as 18-wheelers. There were 25 of them.
Here is the CBS version of the story
The Smithsonian must be drooling. If not, they will be soon. Here's the link!
Still Inspired...Thanks to You
What a surprise! Tonight I happened upon a photo/poetry book called "To Be Nobody But Yourself" that was given to me by a good friend from KCAC 35 years ago. He thought it would inspire me (he was right!) I like to think Jimmy's website is for the folks this poem was written about:
"to be nobody but yourself
in a world that is
constantly doing its best
night and day
to make you everybody else
is to fight the hardest battle
you will ever fight
and to never stop fighting"
PAYPAL to: dwightkarma@gmail.com
Photo by Lissa Wales in better times.
11/11/2006 UPDATE: If you are a new reader, here is an outline of the situation.... Dwight Tindle is in the hospital and appears to be about to lose a kidney plus he has cancer in his back. It does not appear as if he will be leaving the hospital very soon and the pain is so agonizing that he is on a morphine drip. His mother "Ma" Nancy, is taking care of him and he is accepting calls and visitors, though such interludes should be brief so he can rest, obviously.
As of this week Jimmy [who created and founded this blog] got to make it over to the hospital to get Dwight and his mom set up on a PayPal account, so they can receive donations directly by computer. Your help with small amounts of cash is needed and PayPal is the way to go with it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is the dude who used to sign our checks. The one who picked up the tab at the resataurants after everybody excused themselves to the bathroom. The one who came and rescued KCAC from drifting into the rocks, the one who brought Toad, Hank, Bill Compton and a bunch of other talented people over to what turned out to be a radio giant - KDKB.

Don't ask what happened to the money, you got some. So did I. Now Dwight Tindle needs some help. NOT WITH BIG BUCKS - that just draws flies and lawyers. He needs help with hospital incidentals such as gasoline, parking fees, money for groceries, lunch for his mom and such. Spare Change. I can say all this with authority and no embarrasment because I have been there and done that. More than once.

One of the most beautiful Rock & Roll stories I ever read was when CREAM ----- Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce - diverted funds from "Disraeli Gears" to make sure a dying blues musician - Skip James, (who wrote "I'm So Glad" years ago) - thanks, Tom -, was taken care of. What we have the potential of doing is getting there with some love, good wishes and cash BEFORE something like that happens.

A few bucks from a lot of friends means far more than a bankroll and won't draw the attention of bottom-feeders and accountants. Bill Compton's death took everyone by surprise but we came together for Hank and the 1996 reunion and we came together for Toad and we came together for Hank's wake and we came together for Toad's celebration and we came together most recently for the Alwun party. We are still together and I challenge anyone to deny that situations such as this one is WHY we are together..

You have a chance to send a get-well wish or share a memory along with your Spare Change. Karma, serendipity Deja' Vu and just plain Motherly Love (Thanks, Frank Zappa) calls to us. The very fact that you are reading this is a spiritual message:

God is Alive
Magic is Afoot.

I have already sent Dwight five bucks via PayPal with "Lunch is on me" in the subject line. If you don't already have a PayPal Accouunt, you can start one up here....
