Emailing spam to the blog...

Hi!

I've been deleting a number of "spam" posts, several in the last few days, and I'm wondering if any of you post by email. If so, that's cool, we can leave that feature enabled - but if not, then perhaps we could disable this option to reduce the junk ad posts? There's also an option called Word Verification, which would require a poster to enter a sequence of letters and/or numbers to ensure they're really a live person rather than a spamming program - I don't think we need to do this, at least not yet, as most or all of the recent offending entries have been posted by email, but it's available if we need it.

Jimmy, you're the founder, and probably most familiar with the issues involved here, what do you think? It hasn't really become a problem for me to delete the posts, just a minor annoyance at this point, but if we can nip it in the bud that would be nice.

Also looking for any feedback from other members here...

My brother just rented the Woodstock movie again... gotta watch that every once in a while, don't-cha-know.

Hope everyone's havin' a good night...

You're right, Daniel, spam is a persistent problem on this blog. If you know how to implement Word Verification, give it a shot. If not, I'll see what I can find out about it.
Your mention of the Woodstock movie prompted me to do a search for clips on YouTube, and it turns out there are plenty: go here
to view performances by Hendrix, The Who, John Sebastian, Jefferson Airplane and others.

Howdy, Jimmy,

When I looked closer at the Word Verification feature I realized it only applies to comments, not original posts, and we haven't had any spam comments that I know of, so that wouldn't help. As for posting by email, I looked around in the settings and can't find anywhere to disable email posting. Don't know if I'm just not finding it, or if it can't be disabled. I guess we're just going to have to keep deleting the spam as it comes in. No big deal.

Wow! There sure are a lot of clips on that YouTube site, that's really cool. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip on Woodstock, the Movie. I was there at the event and when we returned to Phoenix a few months later, I got the gig to promote the films opening at the Christown Theater. Matter of fact just found in a box 13 of the original promo photos from the press kit...If anybody has a scanner your welcome to post em on line....Yeah, Daniel, were having a smoking good night on the desert...Best to all...Bob Gately

Hey, Bob! It's good to hear you're doing fine - and really interesting about the photos from the original Woodstock press kit, too. Talk about nostalgia! I have a scanner, but haven't hooked it up to my computer yet, and probably won't until we do some rearranging and I can find room for it - so if you could get someone else to scan them, and email me the pictures, I'd gladly make a new Webshots album for them. Of course there are other options for posting them, lots of "photo sites" out there, but add this one to your list of possible choices. It'd be great to see them! May your circle be filled with love and light, brother...

It sure would be great to see the Woodstock photos here! Thanks for mentioning it, Bob. I'm sure you have lots of really cool stuff in your personal archives (o:

Daniel you're right about spam...I've deleted a bunch of it too. But it seems like we're on it, and it might be helpful to keep track of where it coming from. I deleted three different ones from the same sender (presumably automated since one can't reply to it!)

Thanks for the cd...we got it...will write to you about it. Fabulous.

Peace, love and understanding (to borrow from Elvis Costello)

vagabondvet said...

Hmmm... good idea, I'll have to start checking to see where it's coming from, I haven't even bothered to look yet! Duh! Good that you got the CD and like it. Elvis C. rocks!

Hmmm... lotta things makin' me go "Hmmm..." lately. I don't see where you can tell who emailed a post to the blog. I just deleted two more and couldn't see anywhere that the sender was listed. How do you tell?

:~)

Mariah Fleming said...

'Hmmm' back atcha! Isn't spam a pain?? Have you thought of making a copy of the spam you delete? I did that with some. Maybe Jimmy could send them to the server and they could figure it out.

If this so called "Net Neutrality' bill gets passed it's gonna get a whole lot worse too. Leave it to Karl Rove to come up with names that are completely opposite of what they do ie: "Healthy Forests Initiative" if you're interetested in reading more about the 'net neutrality' thing two good resources are www.eff.org (electronic frontier foundation) and www.thehuffingtonpost.com

vagabondvet said...

No, I haven't thought of copying any of the spam. Don't have the energy to pursue it, I'll just delete it.

Wow! That's despicable, about the net neutrality thing and the way companies have been taking advantage of it. Pretty unethical... phuqueing capitalists gotz no morals a-tall. Pity. Something else to write my congressman about... that's at least seven or eight different topics and umpteen degrees of outrage I have to convey to my government. Geez...

And I know what you mean about the contradictions between the names of programs and their actual effects (Healthy Forests, Clean Air, etc.). Classical Madison Avenue advertising and Washington (DC) obfuscation. If we'd hired some company to manage our federal affairs, and they'd botched the job up like this administration has, you can bet your sweet bippy we'd fire 'em and find another company... maybe we're just gonna do that. We can hope and pray, anyway... :~)

Yo, Buds an Bud-dett's,The blackards are ruining our asylum...What ta do but let em rave an punch, "delete".

Yeah, kids, there are a whole lot of images of our past that rest in the archives of photographer, Tom Story. Tom was a high school press guy that I gave backstage pass to back in the olden days. He has an awesome collection of early (60/70's) R n R concerts and such. Tom is now our forest fire photographer but has maintained his collection of early Az rock n roll. He must have shot 10 rolls at our Janis Joplin show at Tempe stadium in 69 and has some great shots of Annie Leibowitz shooting Goose Creek Symphony at our KRIZ Beach Boy concert at Phoenix Municipal stadium to raise the money for the first Terros ambulance in 1970, ???...Somebody might make a interesting portfolio of his work and make a statement on our contribution to the evolution of music in our Valley, an the planet. I just spoke to Tom and he's ready and willing to make some prints for posterity. How bout a show at the Icehouse next fall ? Spoke to Charlie Gearhart the other night and e was going to talk to the boys about doin a show here in town..It would be the first since New Times profiled them in 92.

So, feed back...

Bob,
That is an incredibly wonderful idea! I know Tom Story from ASU days...he's a huge talent and a great guy. He also was very close to Lissa Wales and did a lot of work for her when she was sick. He was her anchor, she told me many times.

I think showcasing Tom's photos would be fabulous and I am on board with anything I can do (freelance writer etc.) This is the best idea I've seen in a long time and Bob you are obviously the guy who can get it going!! We have so much wonderful history here!

I wonder too if Tom would be able to get hold of Lissa's photos that are relevant to that time? She was adamant that the one thing she wanted to happen if she died was for her legacy as a photographer to live on.

Possible tie in to the idea is that a dedicated section of AZ music history images on the AMEHOF site has been in the works...Ken Skaggs is the AMEHOF webmaster (musician, you know him I imagine?) He built the site as a labor of love and has been in the ongoing process of updating the site. (I am a former officer on the AMEHOF board, remain on as the ADV BD and as web liaison for AMEHOF site.)

Perhaps I can be of any help to you in accomplishing this fabulous idea. Feel free to reach me via email @ AzArtsandMinds@msn.com

Ya' got me psyched!

I think it's a great idea too! Will leave a comment in Mariah's next post where she quoted Bob...

Yes, yes, YES...With Lissa and Toms archives there is a page turner of a book in the works...Maybe to benefit AMEHOF. I will get in touch with Helen at the Icehouse and get her behind us...Jimmy, sounds like you got a handle on press and promo and Mariah can put a press kit together... Now we need some ideas on what kind of event we'd like to do...I like the idea of a three day Peace, Love and Art Festival. (not very original but ya got to start with something)

Bob Ramsey still has his light show in the garage and he was keen a few months ago to fire it up...Why I can see the three story high images splayed across the Icehouse walls now.... Wow, sounds like a Gathering of the Tribes is in order...I would be delighted to be a co-producer but my ole promoter chops are too rusty to do the whole show...Anybody got a Bud to bring aboard with some up to date experience ? With so many cool rooms at the Icehouse we could have a Peace room to honor our vets, a Love space for the Hippies (William Edward, et al)the big performance space for the music and our eras art everywhere...Now THAT sounds like a PARTY !

Yeah, Jimmy, I still have a copy of Vol Two, Number One that announces the change from the Arizona Times to the New Times...Maybe Lacey would be up for a Rebirth issue..Press on !

Looking at my calender and see that Thanksgiving is on a thursday, thus that friday, saturday and sunday would be perfect as many ole timers would be back in town to be with family...Hows that sound ?

Looking foreward to feedback...This is Fun !

Best to all,

Bob Gately

Hoddy, Bob,

Don't know who this Lacey person is, but assume she's someone at the New Times? Anyway, if that's what you're getting at here, I have copies of half a dozen or so issues of Rebirth, and could mail them to her if she wants to use them in producing a Rebirth issue...? Email me if this sounds like a good idea?

:~)

Daniel - Lacey is Mike Lacey, founding editor of New Times and quite a character (think of the editor in Spiderman), who surely wouldn't appreciate being called a "she"! I'm also pretty sure he wouldn't be interested in this idea - the paper is not big on nostalgia, in general - but hang on to those issues. I'm sure someone here will have a creative idea on how to incorporate them into these plans.

vagabondvet said...

Allrightythen, thanks, Jimmy. Any and all necessary apologies to Mike.

:~)

Mariah Fleming said...

Daniel, you bet people will appreciate your Rebirth issues. Myself included! If you have extra copies I'd love to have them myself. Hang on to that stuff, Daniel.

And Bob if you have early issues of New Times from the beginning I'd love to see them. In the early 70's I
wrote to Mike Lacey regarding an article he'd done about a new Joni Mitchell album. The article's focus was on her nude self portrait. Go figure! Lacey's response in the next issue was worth saving.

But alas, I've long since lost those old issues and my beloved bright yellow and brown Krazy Dog Krazy Boy poster too...now THAT gets me. Ahh, youth...

I do think that we should begin a "Ring of Desire" lyric thread where we wee wee intellectuals post a line, anytime and anywhere in the thread..intersecting lines can be run off on the side and become their own thread..Everybody owns their own spirit web and there is room for all...

Its Rons, Scoot, scoot Highway Boogie...Jimmys, Yes, I always write...When I'm wrong...Mariahs, Coyotes come with the full moon howling, Daniels, It aint about the fish...to any wackey or profound thought when ya sit down at the keyboard and play...

I woke up this morning and asked god to not give me another great idea today...she didnt listen...
