WHAT did they know & WHEN did they know it (Prophecy in song)

Up From The Skies
Jimi Hendrix
ca 1968

I JUST WANT TO TALK TO YOU
I WON'T DO YOU NO HARM
I JUST WANT TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR DIFFERENT LIVES,
ON THIS HERE PEOPLE FARM
I HEARD SOME OF YOU GOT YOUR FAMILIES,
LIVING IN CAGES TALL AND COLD
AND SOME JUST STAY THERE AND DUST AWAY,
PAST THE AGE OF OLD

IS THIS TRUE?
PLEASE LET ME TALK TO YOU
I JUST WANT TO KNOW ABOUT,
THE ROOMS BEHIND YOUR MINDS
DO I SEE A VACUUM THERE OR AM I GOING BLIND?
OR IS IT JUST REMAINS FROM VIBRATIONS AND ECHOES LONG AGO
THINGS LIKE LOVE THE WORLD AND LET YOUR FANCY FLOW

IS THIS TRUE?
PLEASE LET ME TALK TO YOU, LET ME TALK TO YOU
I HAVE LIVED HERE BEFORE THE DAYS OF ICE
AND OF COURSE THIS IS WHY I'M SO CONCERNED
AND I COME BACK TO FIND THE STARS MISPLACED
AND THE SMELL OF A WORLD THAT HAS BURNED
THE SMELL OF A WORLD THAT HAS BURNED

WELL MAYBE, MAYBE IT'S JUST A CHANGE OF CLIMATE
I CAN DIG IT I CAN DIG IT BABY
I JUST WANT TO SEE

SO WHERE DO I PURCHASE MY TICKET
I WOULD JUST LIKE TO HAVE A RINGSIDE SEAT
I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW MOTHER EARTH
I WANT TO HEAR AND SEE EVERYTHING
I WANT TO HEAR AND SEE EVERYTHING
I WANT TO HEAR AND SEE EVERYTHING
YEAH
AW SHUCKS
IF MY DADDY COULD SEE ME NOW

Superfly story, Bob. The Great Ones really are decent humans, aren't they........ often exceptional.

Bob,
What a delight to read your post and have my own memories come flooding back of that night.
I was at that concert only because I went with one of the guys at KRIZ. The place was SRO.
The vibe in the audience was electric. It was my first rock concert believe it or not.

We were backstage, where my date insisted we go hang out to meet Hendrix before the show. So I met Jimi Hendrix briefly (that's stretching it, my date introduced me and I was so shy I barely said two words.) Hendrix seemed sweet and very humble, a man of few words, looked to be kind of in awe of the whole thing that was happening around him. Intense. Focused on the task ahead.
In my few moments around him, there was a definite "light" around him, an energy that was truly unforgettable.

He was an unpretentious guy, wasn't he? Was he as unimpressed with his own 'persona' as it seemed? The word 'gracious' comes to mind
about him that night. It must have been such a rush to get him played on KRIZ for him and for you guys who made it happen. But of course, mine was just a teen age girl's impression of Hendrix. It was a great night, and put Tempe on the map as far as cool stuff at ASU as I recall, thanks to you.

I was deeply bummed when I went to his grave and saw that it was covered over with "sex, drugs and rock and roll" type grafitti, just like Jim Morrison's was. Somehow it seemed more fitting for Morrison's to have that "get high till you die" sort of stuff scrawled all over his tombstone.

You mentioned Steve Martin. I also remember knowing Steve for awhile though he wouldn't remember me I'm sure. I can well imagine your description of Martin's pop eyed infectious enthusiasm when he dropped that record on the turntable. It sounded like the whole studio was going nuts...those are precious memories, I'm really glad you remember that day so well.

Martin had a record 'library' in a little room at his house (in the Maryvale area if I recall correctly) that rivaled Andy Olson's current one. He was a kind, decent and hilarious guy. I've always been glad for him that he made it in radio too.

Thanks for jogging my memory and bringing a sweet blast of joy into my day. Keep on writing!

You asked for it, Bruce, you got it:

Copy and paste the above URL into a new window to play Jimi Henrix's "Up From The Skies" and a short excerpt (all I could find) of the Sons of Champlin's "Why Do People Run From The Rain."
